The Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This hybrid is a beautiful blend of the clever goofiness of Poodles with the loyalty of the Bernese. Bernedoodles make perfect companion dogs. Even better, they have little to no shedding, so they are highly recommended for those with allergies. Because Bernedoodles are a cross between two very different breeds, their chances of inheriting health problems are greatly lowered since both parents need to share a disease in order for it to be passed on. This gives them what’s referred to as “hybrid vigor,” and they can be expected to live longer, healthier lives than their purebred parents. The combination of goofy liveliness and intelligence inherited from the Poodle, mixed with the gentleness, sweetness, and loyalty of the Bernese, make Bernedoodles excellent family pets.
COATS AND COLORING
Bernedoodles come in any combination of white, brown, and black. The stunning tri-colored coats are the most difficult to achieve, and are therefore the most desirable. Oreo Bernedoodles are a combination of black and white. Bernedoodles usually have curly coats, making them hypoallergenic with little to no shedding.
Bernedoodles come in various sizes. A standard Bernedoodle is a cross between a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. These puppies can range from 50lbs to 90lbs, and stand 23 to 29 inches at the shoulder. A Mini Bernedoodle is a cross between a Miniature Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. These puppies stand 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder and are anywhere from 25 to 49 lbs. Tiny Bernedoodles result from crossing a Toy Poodle with a Mini Bernedoodle. They grow to be 10 to 24 lbs and stand 12 to 17 inches at the shoulder.
F1 is a first generation cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This makes the puppies 50 percent Bernese and 50 percent Poodle.
F1b is a backcross of a Bernedoodle bred with a Poodle. These puppies are 25 percent Bernese and 75 percent poodle. F1b puppies are desirable because of their likeliness to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly.
F2 is a second-generation cross between two F1 Bernedoodles, making the puppies 50 percent Bernese and 50 percent poodle.
F2b is a second-generation Bernedoodle crossed with a Poodle, making the puppies 62.5 percent poodle and 37.5 percent Bernese. This cross is also very allergy-friendly and non-shedding.
